Jar City shoots for the Oscars
Baltasar Kormákur’s critical and commercial success Jar City is Iceland’s contender for an Academy Awards nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The Icelandic thriller came back last month from festival screenings in Telluride, Colorado and in Toronto, where it received standing ovations and was picked up by US distributor IFC. It was also recently sold by Trust Film Sales to Memento Film Distribution in France.
18 international festivals have now booked the film, including the London Film Festival, where it will screen in the Cinema Europa sidebar on October 21.
(The Icelandic thriller, which addresses issues related to the abuse of genetic information, was produced by Kormákur’s production outfit Blueeyes Productions, in co-production with Bavaria Pictures in Germany and Nordisk Film in Denmark. The film is also running for a Nordic Council Film Prize Award and for the European Film Awards nominations.
Last year’s Oscar contender from Iceland was Ragnar Bragason’s Children.
The official Oscars nominations will be announced on January 22, 2008 and the 80th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 24 in Los Angeles.)
